Robotics Team 1538 / The Holy Cows:
To our community, we’re a group of students who build robots. To our neighboring schools, we’re the kids with the crazy cow mascot. To our teachers, we’re the ones that work late into the night. When asked why we put so much time and effort into robotics, our answer is simple: FIRST is more than robots and competitions. It’s about learning valuable life skills and making connections with other people and groups. It’s about discovering a newfound passion in STEM and preaching about its importance. And more than building a robot, it’s about building a team of leaders who want to make a difference. The Holy Cows consider it their mission to embody and support the spirit and goals of FIRST, and equip members with real world skills and working knowledge. Furthermore, The Holy Cows work year round to grow an appreciation for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and give back to the community. The Chairman's award: The Chairman’s Award is the most prestigious award at FIRST, it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST. Those that have won the award at the FIRST Championships are inducted into the FIRST Hall of Fame. Team 1538 / The Holy Cows was inducted into the FIRST Hall of Fame on April 27, 2013. Year after year we strive to uphold the high standards required of a FIRST Hall of Fame member by helping other teams, our community, and beyond. Our goal is to create opportunities that help and inspire our students and the FIRST community. We thank all those that have been a part of our journey and all those that continue to serve as an inspiration to our team. Here is our video submission that I participated in: |
My Experience:
When I first joined the team back in 8th grade it wasn't my choice, I joined because me sister did it and my family thought it would be in my best interest to join. I was against it for along time, arguing with my parents, telling them it wasn't fair that I couldn't do what I wanted to. This was 4 years ago, and now I look back and I can not thank them enough. This team is more than just a team to me, they are a family. We say that probably because we spend almost everyday making robots together. Being on this team has opened up tons of amazing opportunities. I have traveled to; Las Vegas, NV. Phoenix, AZ. Ventura, CA, St. Louis, Mo. and many places with in China. This Past summer a few team members, my self included, got the opportunity to travel to china and help local Chinese teams with their finish their robots to compete in the China Robotics Challenge (CRC). Which they also asked us to participate in. The competition and the sightseeing weren't the important things though. The important thing was making sure these teams knew what being a team was all about, And luckily we were given the opportunity again for this next summer so hopefully it stuck with them and we can continue to improve their skills.
